Street art is a hybrid form of graffiti and in terms of its significance in art history is meanwhile regarded as one of the most important art movements since punk in the 1970s.

The pioneers of street art include artists like Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat. But unlike graffiti sprayers, these artists were more interested in the critical examination of current social and political issues and contents than about marking their territory with so-called “tags”.

Due to the increasing commercialisation of this meanwhile “hip” art form through advertising and trade shows, however, at some point the actual idea behind the autonomous movement – to show alternatives to everyday mainstream art – got lost along the way.
